Ozone Injections for Ganglion Cysts: A Non-Surgical Treatment
Written By: Dr. Anderson ~ 7/6/2023

Introduction:

Ganglion cysts can be a source of pain, discomfort, often requiring surgical intervention for removal. However, a new non-surgical treatment option has emerged that shows promise in helping patients avoid surgery. This innovative technique involves the injection of ozone gas into ganglion cysts, offering a potential alternative for those seeking a non-invasive solution. In this article, we will explore the concept of ozone gas injection and its potential as a non-surgical treatment for ganglion cysts.

Understanding Ganglion Cysts:

Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps that develop near joints or tendons. They are typically benign and may vary in size. Ganglion cysts can cause pain, reduce mobility of the affected joints, and they can be unsightly. They frequently occur on the wrist, fingers or foot, but can occur in many other locations.

Typical Treatments:

Fluid from the cysts can be removed, but in most cases the fluid will return within a day or so because the sac or capsule continues to create fluid. Historically, the cysts needed to be removed by a surgeon. Although these procedures can be effective, they are not without drawbacks. Surgery carries inherent risks, including the potential for infection, scarring, damage to the nerves or tendons in the area, and recurrence of the cyst.

Ozone Gas Injection: A Non-Surgical Alternative

Ozone gas injections have emerged as a promising non-surgical treatment option for ganglion cysts. Ozone, a naturally occurring gas composed of three oxygen atoms (O3) is a strong oxidizer. Injecting ozone gas directly into the cyst will oxidize the tissue that produces the fluid so that it can no longer do so. Patients usually require anywhere from 1-3 treatments for resolution of the cyst.

Benefits of Ozone Gas Injection:

  1. Non-surgical approach: Ozone gas injection provides a non-invasive alternative to surgery, minimizing the risks associated with surgical procedures.

  2. Quick recovery time: Compared to surgery, ozone gas injection takes a matter of minutes and patients are allowed to resume their daily activities the same day.

  3. High success rates: Initial studies have shown promising results with ozone gas injection, demonstrating significant reductions in cyst size and associated symptoms, including pain and restricted joint movement.

  4. Minimal side effects: Ozone gas injection is generally well-tolerated, with minimal side effects reported. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or temporary swelling at the injection site.

  5. Cost-effective: As a non-surgical procedure, ozone gas injection may prove to be a cost-effective alternative, reducing healthcare expenses for patients and healthcare systems.
