Pain Treatment Injections

Prompt a Natural Healing Response with Help from Bothell's Dr. Nicole Anderson

Pain injection treatments promote nature healingWhile a change in diet, rehabilitation, or other lifestyle shifts can help to resolve chronic pain, Dr. Nicole Anderson often finds it necessary to administer regenerative and pain treatment injections at her Bothell-based practice. Rather than relying on anti-inflammatory medications such as steroids, which shut down inflammation as well as tissue healing, she uses natural ingredients and other strategies to stimulate the body’s own healing processes.

In many cases, the source of pain is chronic inflammation, persistent muscle tightness, or joint instability. Pain treatment injections can target the inflammation, reduce muscle tension, and improve joint stability, leading to a resolution of the ongoing pain.

Do Pain Treatment Injections Cure the Problem?

As with all of the treatments at Anderson Natural Medicine, the goal is not to “silence the alarm” of pain by dulling your senses to it. In other words, pain is not the problem. Pain is the body’s way of alerting you to a problem that needs attention. With this in mind, pain treatment injections promote natural healing so that the body no longer has to raise an alert that something is wrong.

In some cases, as with acute injuries, the healing response to the pain treatment injections physically repairs the defect. In other cases, such as joint laxity, the strategy may repair the specific structures causing pain—but the chronic condition that caused the laxity in the first place may remain. Dr. Anderson will continue to work with you, following the trail of signs and symptoms backward until she discovers the ultimate source of any chronic issues. The human body has an amazing capacity to heal itself, and her goal is to give it the encouragement it needs to do so.

Trigger Point Injections for Pain Treatment

Trigger point pain injections for acute pain.

Many people have experience with trigger points, which are small, painful areas of chronically tight muscle that often feel like a knot or nodule. The pain of a trigger point can be localized, or it can radiate when pressure is applied. The most common trigger points that Dr. Anderson sees are above and between the shoulder blades, in the neck, and in the hips and buttocks. Trigger point injections are made directly into the tight muscle fibers, which improves circulation right away and reduces inflammation to the area, providing pain relief.

This pain treatment injection strategy is used to address chronic back, hip, and neck pain, as well as chronic tension headaches. Persistently tight muscle fibers can do anything from pull on the skull to put pressure on nerves. Sciatica, for example, is a pain that radiates through the buttocks and down the thigh and leg, sometimes as a result of an inflamed or spasming piriformis muscle in the buttocks “clamping down” on the long sciatic nerve. Relaxing the muscles with a natural pain treatment injection relieves the pressure on the nerve, which causes the sciatica to go away.

Prolotherapy for Pain Treatment

When joints are injured, whether through specific trauma or long-term stress, the problem can be made worse by lax ligaments that cause instability, leading to abnormal wear on the joints. Prolotherapy is a pain treatment injection that addresses overstretched ligaments, rolled ankles, sacroiliac joint problems, knee and shoulder pain, and more. For this treatment, Dr. Anderson introduces a small amount of a natural irritant—dextrose or platelet-rich plasma (PRP)—directly into the soft tissue of the joint. The irritation prompts the body to focus on the ligament itself, laying down new tissue that leads to a tightening effect. Tightening the ligament improves joint function and reduces or stops the pain in the area.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Pain Treatment Injections

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used to help the body regenerate damaged tissues, naturally. It works well for damaged ligaments, tendons, muscle, and joints. Platelets, which contain growth factors, are isolated directly from a patient’s own blood, concentrated, and re-injected into damaged tissues and joints, which helps to activate stem cells and stimulates the body to create new tissue. Because the platelets are the body’s own cells, there is no chance of rejection or adverse reaction from the cells themselves in this pain treatment injection.

As damaged tissues are regenerated, stability of joints and soft tissue improves, and patients experience improvement in function and a reduction in pain.

Dr. Anderson also uses PRP in aesthetics. It can be used for revitalizing dormant follicles to encourage new growth in hair restoration treatments and to increase new skin collagen production for anti-aging treatments.
